One day in Mazatlán can pair time along the Malecón with a visit to Centro Histórico, including Plazuela Machado and the Basilica exterior. Add Mercado Municipal José Ma. Pino Suárez or Gran Acuario Mazatlán, then return to the waterfront for an evening walk. Hotel Playa Marina is a two-star hotel in Mazatlán.

  • Route: Malecón, Centro Histórico, Plazuela Machado and the Basilica, then a market or aquarium stop.
  • Market: Mercado Municipal José Ma. Pino Suárez has different Sunday hours from its Monday-to-Saturday schedule.
  • Aquarium: Gran Acuario Mazatlán is in Parque Central and offers admission to more than 30 habitats.
  • Getting around: Pulmonías are available around the Malecón, Olas Altas and Centro Histórico.
Start with a walk on the Malecón

Start with a walk on the Malecón

The Malecón gives you an open-air start to a day that continues into the historic centre. Walk along the waterfront first, then head toward Centro Histórico; the route can be adjusted to leave room for a longer stop later in the day.

If you would rather cover part of the waterfront by vehicle, MuéveteMaz operates panoramic buses along the Malecón. The route takes approximately 40 minutes, with rides at approximately 20-minute intervals; you can board at the parking area in front of Acuario Mazatlán, between Av. de los Deportes and Av. Cruz Lizárraga.

Head into Centro Histórico

Head into Centro Histórico

Centro Histórico is the next stop for historic streets and buildings, with Plazuela Machado and the Basilica as natural points to include in your walk. For a route focused on the area’s streets and architecture, follow this walking guide to Mazatlán Centro Histórico.

Pulmonías operate around the Malecón, Olas Altas and Centro Histórico. Local buses connect beaches, Centro Histórico and commercial areas, while local taxis are available 24 hours a day.

Pause at Plazuela Machado and the cathedral

Pause at Plazuela Machado and the cathedral

Plazuela Machado and the Basilica exterior make a compact pairing within Centro Histórico. Take time to see both as part of your walk, then choose between a market visit and an aquarium stop for the next part of the day.

To keep the historic-centre portion together, you can visit the plaza and Basilica before moving on to another district or attraction. The walking route through Centro Histórico also helps you plan this part of the day on foot.

Choose a market, museum or aquarium stop

Choose a market, museum or aquarium stop

Choose Mercado Municipal José Ma. Pino Suárez for a central market visit, or go to Gran Acuario Mazatlán for its habitats and animal presentations. The market is in Centro; the aquarium is in Parque Central.

Mercado Municipal José Ma. Pino Suárez

The market has operated at its Centro location since 1900. Its sections sell meat, fish and seafood, chicken, spices, fruit and vegetables, prepared snacks, sweets, cheeses, handicrafts, souvenirs and clothing.

The market is open Monday through Saturday from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and Sunday from 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM. If you plan to eat or browse there, fit the visit into the earlier part of the day, particularly on Sunday.

Gran Acuario Mazatlán

Gran Acuario Mazatlán is at Av. Leonismo Internacional SN, Tellería, in Parque Central. Admission includes access to more than 30 habitats, bird, diving and sea-lion exhibitions, and the Humboldt penguin habitat.

Regular admission costs $612 MXN for adults, $498 MXN for children ages 3–11, and $487 MXN for adults over 65; children under 3 and people with disabilities enter free. Mazatlán residents pay $509 MXN for adults and $453 MXN for children ages 3–11, with a current INE showing a Mazatlán address required for the resident rate.

Outside food and drinks are not allowed, and re-entry is not permitted after leaving. For more on planning your visit, read about Gran Acuario Mazatlán.

Finish with an evening waterfront walk

Return to the waterfront for an evening walk after your Centro and attraction stops. If you used the market or aquarium as a longer visit, keep this final part simple: head back toward the Malecón and enjoy the public promenade.

Adjust the route for heat and opening hours

Plan the market or aquarium around its opening hours, and leave the waterfront walk flexible. The market opens earlier than the aquarium, so it can fit at the start of the day if you choose it. The aquarium’s ticket sales close between 4:30 PM and 5:00 PM, depending on the page; check the official site before you go.
